Designer Udi Behr says he is "very political" in his jewelry. "I'm not ashamed of this." He sees jewelry design as a way to express his social and political opinions. "I have, for example, a line that's called 1,138, and this number appears on the jewelry. It's the number of federal rights that a married couple living in America enjoys, and that homosexuals living together do not get. I'm the only designer who hopes Republicans won't buy his jewelry." Apparently, he says, they don't.

Udi Behr won’t take no for an answer. So when the Israeli jewelry designer saw Mayor Gavin Newsome espouse gay marriage on television, he was inspired to create a new high line of wedding and commitment bands especially tailored for the gay and lesbian community. Behr’s dreams almost fell short of reality as high end retail stores such as Saks, who had featured previous collections designed by Udi, were wary when it came to backing his latest venture. But Behr says, “The more you say no to me, the more you fuel me.” After eight months of rejection, Udi gave up on the conventional route and put together his own team of entrepreneurs who are as passionate for the cause as he is and so we celebrate the birth of Loveandpride.com, the online jewelry destination for the gay and lesbian community. Udi and his team will take their convictions one step further and donate 10% of all proceeds from this collection to Marriage Equality, a non-profit organization who works to secure the right to marry for same sex couples.

Well, you wouldn’t be the first “A-list” celebrity to wear designs by Udi Behr, whose client list boasts big name stars such as Sharon Stone and pop princess Brittney Spears. “It is an opportunity to do something right with a form of art I know,” says Behr an avid supporter of equal rights for all mankind.

| Showtime and Love and Pride Partner on Launch of L Word and Queer As Folk Jewelry Lines

"The jewelry line, to be called The L word Collection, is also scheduled to be introduced in February. The merchandise will be marketed by a New York company called Love and Pride, which sells the work of a jewelry designer named Udi Behr primarily to gay and lesbian consumers... Mr. Behr said that the L Word Collection will be priced from $30 to $1000, with most items for $100 and under. The company also plans a line of jewelry named after another Showtime series, "Queer as Folk," which completed a five-season run on August 7... Both Ron Robinson Inc. and Love and Pride have signed two-year licensing agreements with Showtime to use "The L Word" name and imagery, and both agreements have renewal options."

Popping the question can be a nerve-racking event – especially gay couples, who then have the headache of finding a place willing to issue them a marriage license. Finding a ring however, just got easier, thanks to Manhattan jewelry designer Udi Behr’s new Love and Pride collection, which include gold a silver bands decorated with interlocking male or female emblems, or upside-down triangles, Bling-maker to the stars – including Sharon Stone, Britney Spears and Ludarcis – Behr was inspired by San Francisco Mayor Given Newsome’s efforts to support gay unions. When retailers refused to the line, he created his own website, www.loveandpride.com, to sell the jewelry.

| Same-sex jewelry line generates big response |

Udi Behr has been in the jewelry industry for over two decades. His remarkable designs over the years have been a direct reflection of his life experiences. Behr’s popular Love+Peace+Hope collection was inspired by the spirit of generosity in the aftermath of the events of September 11th. I really try to design my jewelry according to the way my life is and what I see around me", says Behr, who considers himself a jewelry philosopher rather than a jewelry designer. His newest venture, Love and Pride, was inspired as a result of what he calls a great social injustice, the discrimination that same sex couples face when it comes to marriage. Udi’s glorious and unique designs from his exclusive Love and Pride collection are his way of showing his support for this community and this special cause.

The future of gay marriage may be up to the courts, but Udi Behr a longtime supporter of equal rights for all, remains passionate about this cause. Behr has been designing magnificent pieces of jewelry for over 25 years. His client list boasts the names of many “A-list” celebrities, from pop princess Brittney Spears to rap mogul Ludacris. When top retailers such as Saks Fifth Avenue, who have sold Udi’s designs in the past, showed resistance to his latest jewelry line, which is tailored for same sex couples, Behr went elsewhere. “It’s hard for me to believe we can ignore the subject” says Udi. So Behr and his backers have created their own outlet, Loveandpride.com. The online destination for commitment and wedding bands for the gay and lesbian community.

Gay City News interviewed designer Udi Behr shortly after the designer showed his Love & Pride Collection at Olympus Fashion Week in New York. Behr, recently named one of the top seven jewelry designers working today, tells the publication: “I look at the issue of gay marriage the same way I looked at ending segregation—it’s a human rights issue.” The article also features an interview with Reichen Lehmkuhl, star of the Emmy-award-winning show “The Amazing Race,” who joined Behr during Fashion Week to celebrate the launch of Love & Pride. The story notes that despite a few hurdles getting Love & Pride off the ground, the jewelry is selling quite well.

| Unsung Heroes: Udi Behr Sets the Record 'Straight' with Gay Jewelry |

Bob Dylan once famously said, “I think of a hero as someone who understands the degree of responsibility that comes with his freedom.” By this definition, Love and Pride founder and chief designer Udi Behr is a veritable giant among men.
Since launching his Love and Pride collection in 2005, Behr has managed to do what no man, gay or straight, has done before—design and market a collection of jewelry specifically for the gay and lesbian community that benefits the gay and lesbian community.

The diamond industry’s leading publication interviews Love & Pride designer Udi Behr about marketing to the gay community. The numbers indicate that the community represents a largely untapped market for the jewelry industry, with a buying power estimated at $610 billion annually. Some still feel it’s too political a market to court, but other companies like Cartier, Bulgari, David Yurman and Love & Pride have intentionally targeted gays and lesbians. The launch of the Love & Pride collection, in April of this year, marked what is believed to be the first time a high-quality jewelry line was created specifically for same-sex couples. “The more research I did, the more I saw that the jewelry industry was just completely ignoring that market,” says Behr. The designer encourages others to follow in his footsteps. “Don’t be afraid. Gays and lesbians are just like anyone else. I would love to see more companies, as well as our industry as a whole, stand to support gay and lesbian people. It is such a great community to work with: they are very supportive, very loyal, very fun.”

On a crisp evening set in early spring, in the city where anything is possible, there was a small group of visionaries who gathered together. They came together in the season which celebrates new life and new beginnings to celebrate that very vision. In the landmark St. Bartholomew’s Church of New York City, designer to the Hollywood Elite, Udi Behr, launched his exclusive collection of commitment and wedding bands designed especially for same sex couples. This collection is aptly named Love and Pride. The designer was deeply moved by San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, who stood up for same-sex marriage in spite of political pressures and was inspired to take action of his own. In a teary eyed commitment ceremony sponsored by Love and Pride, four couples exchanged vows as well as wedding bands featured in Behr’s new line.

“Eleven-thirty-eight is the magic number when it comes to marriage
equality,” said designer Udi Behr, creator of the 1138 and Love,
Peace and Hope Collections. “When you tell someone there are
more than a thousand rights married couples receive that their
lesbian and gay family and friends do not, it creates the kind of ‘aha’
moment that can change hearts and minds.”
