It’s hard to believe that it’s been a year since Aaron Schock‘s political career went up in flames after allegations that he misused campaign donations and taxpayer money to fund his lavish, jet-setting lifestyle. But it has. And it looks like the embers are still red hot.

Rumor has it, a grand jury has been secretly meeting since last April to decide whether the 34-year-old flaming heterosexual should face federal charges, and they are preparing to make a huge announcement in the coming days or weeks.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy Bass of the Central District of Illinois, has been leading the charge against Schock and is said to have been issuing subpoena after subpoena after subpoena in ruthless pursuit of the disgraced antigay Republican congressman’s spending records.

“He puts on a good case,” Jon Gray Noll, an Illinois attorney who has worked with Bass before, says. “He’s relentless.”

Meanwhile, Schock’s legal team appears to be shaking in their boots at the prospect of what could be one hell of a case filed against him, but they remain committed to fighting it out. At least for now.

“It is one year since the U.S. Attorney in Springfield started investigating every aspect of Aaron Schock’s life,” Mark Hubbard, a spokesman for Schock’s lawyers, said in a statement. “Mr. Schock has already paid a heavy price by leaving office for the good of the constituents he served. We are putting our trust in the sound exercise of judgment by prosecuting authorities–but if necessary, we will mount a rigorous case to vindicate Mr. Schock’s position in a court of law.”

Schock has already forked over millions of dollars to his current attorneys, and he will likely owe millions more when everything is said and done. He also owes $750,000 to his previous attorneys. And on top of that, he has $750,000 in campaign debt.

Think of all the Saudi Arabian antiques and Katy Perry concert tickets he could’ve purchased with that money instead.
