Atlanta Journal Constitution: Georgia’s Anti-LGBT Bill Could Put Super Bowl Bid in Jeopardy

by Maureen McCarty March 18, 2016

Today, the NFL suggested that the city of Atlanta's bid for the Super Bowl could be jeopardized should Governor Deal sign the discriminatory anti-LGBT bill HB 757 into law.

“NFL policies emphasize tolerance and inclusiveness, and prohibit discrimination based on age, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or any other improper standard, league spokesman Brian McCarthy told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “Whether the laws and regulations of a state and local community are consistent with these policies would be one of many factors NFL owners may use to evaluate potential Super Bowl host sites.”

The NFL joined all of Georgia’s major sports teams, including the Falcons, Braves and Hawks, in opposing the discriminatory bill.

“One of my bedrock values is ‘Include Everyone’ and it’s a principle we embrace and strive to live each and every day with my family and our associates, a vast majority of which live and work in Georgia,” Falcons owner Arthur Blank said to AJC. “I strongly believe a diverse, inclusive and welcoming Georgia is critical to our citizens and the millions of visitors coming to enjoy all that our great state has to offer. House Bill 757 undermines these principles and would have long-lasting negative impact on our state and the people of Georgia.”

As it stands, HB 757 could allow a business owner or employee to refuse service to LGBT people. It could also undermine local non-discrimination ordinances that protect LGBT people, permit hospitals to refuse to provide medically necessary care and allow a taxpayer-funded service provider to discriminate by denying a job because of the applicant's religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.

Governor Deal made clear weeks ago that he wouldn't sign legislation that allows discrimination--now is the time for him to show Georgia and the nation that he means it. Take action now to urge Georgia Governor Deal to veto this bill.
