HRC Foundation Joins Young Black Gay Men’s Leadership Initiative

by HRC staff April 07, 2016

Last week, HRC Foundation participated in The Young Black Gay Men’s Leadership Initiative’s (YBGLI) fourth annual policy and advocacy summit in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. YBGLI is a national movement of young black men addressing issues disproportionately affecting their peers, with a particular focus on HIV prevention, care and treatment.

YBHLI is a collection of committed young black gay, bisexial, same-gender loving (SGL) and other men who have sex with men (MSM) from around the country. These individuals represent a wide cross section of people engaging with pertinent issues and policies surrounding the targeted population. A diverse organizing committee comprised of YBMSM leaders heads YBGLI , al of whom are under the age of 30 with professional backgrounds in research, health, policy and advocacy. With expertise in a number of defined areas, the organizing committee works to expand the abilities and talents of young black gay, bisexual, SGL and MSM to bear against the face of the HIV epidemic.

Marvell L. Terry II, HRCF HIV Project Manager, served as YBGLI faculty member, leading a workshop on “Youth Lead Movements.” Additional HRC Foundation staff members attended the summit, including Leslie Hall, HBCU Project Manager and Cory Gordy, HBCU Project Graduate Intern. Hall and Gordy delivered a presentation on the work that HRC is doing with historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) and communities of color.

The attendees engaged in workshops titled Call to Action! Why HIV is More Than Prevention and Treatment, LGBT Youth and Youth Homelessness, and Understanding Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP), which was sponsored by Gilead.

HRC Foundation is a proud sponsor of the Young Black Gay Men’s Leadership Initiative.

HRC Foundation's HBCU Project empowers LGBTQ students on HBCU campuses to be change agents in their local communities and teaches them how to lead resourcefully through the intersections of race, religion, gender identity, class and sexual orientation. Learn more here.
