Maryland Gay-Straight Alliance Meets with HRC Foundation’s HBCU Project

by HRC staff April 07, 2016

Post submitted by HBCU Project Manager Leslie Hall

HRC Foundation’s historically Black colleges and universities (HBCU) Project hosted members of the Safe Space – Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) from Fairmont Heights High School in Maryland. Fifteen high school students participated in a workshop on HBCUs, advocacy, LGBTQ sexual health and college readiness. Students shared their thoughts and ideas on gender identity and expression and current events.

Gay-straight alliances in schools play a central role in facilitating safe and welcoming environments for LGBTQ students. They also provide opportunities to educate straight allies on the dangers of homophobia and transphobia, and the serious implications harassment and discrimination present to LGBTQ Americans – particularly youth.

Marvell Terry, HIV Project Manager, presented on positive sexual health and HIV prevention and HRC Foundation Assistant Sam Anderson gave a presentation on Trans* 101.

HRC hopes that the students left with a call to action to get involved in their community and to continue to tell their stories. We have great expectations for these students and hope that they will continue to make noise, make change and make a difference at their respective campuses.
