Moving Marriage Equality Forward in Chile

by Ashley Fowler April 26, 2016

On April 14, marriage equality advocates in Chile held an important meeting with President Bachelet. During the meeting they presented President Bachelet with their proposed marriage equality bill. Advocates at the meeting told HRC that the president agreed the bill needs to be introduced as soon as possible.

Luis Larrain of the Iguales Foundation participated in HRC's Global Innovative Advocacy Summit last month, where he exchanged ideas and best practices with leaders in the fight for LGBTQ equality worldwide. Days after Larrain returned to Chile, Iguales launched a new effort to push for marriage equality ahead of the country's next election.

Larrain was also a leader in the passage of the January 2015 civil unions bill for same-sex couples following five years of advocacy.

HRC previously reported on progress in Chile, most recently following the advancement of a transgender rights bill in 2014 and more recently in 2015 as civil unions began in the country.

HRC Global will continue to monitor the situation in Chile and elsewhere around the world. There are currently only 20 countries that have full marriage equality.

by Derek de Koff October 20, 2016

In his younger days as one-third of The Jonas Brothers, the DNCE frontman was barred from talking about sex and romance, for obvious reasons. “Hollywood Records were under Disney,” he tells NOTION, “and obviously just the age we were, we had to be careful with the certain things we wrote and said.” We couldn’t be [...]
