HRC joins former NAACP President Ben Jealous in mourning the death of Demetrius Mallisham, who, as a longtime member of the Baltimore Mayor’s Office of Neighborhoods, was a respected and enthusiastic advocate for the city’s LGBT community. He died April 28 at age 46.
“Demetrius was a great friend to and advocate for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community," Carlton Smith, executive director of Black Equity Baltimore, told the Baltimore Sun. "He was an interactive and high-spirited person who left a great impression. He helped the transgender community and wanted to make sure people were safe."
Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake in a statement said that Mallisham was “constantly upbeat, enthusiastic and eager to help.”
