DVD: “Hail, Caesar!” “Zootopia,” “Vinyl: The Complete First Season,” & More!

by Lawrence Ferber June 08, 2016

What a wacky week we have in home entertainment – Channing Tatum in a sailor suit getting queer during a musical number, an animated Disney pic with an obviously gay character, and John Cameron Mitchell as Andy Warhol in an HBO series.

Hmm, what titles might these be?

Read on for the trailers and details.

Hail, Caesar!

($34.98 Blu-ray, $29.98 DVD; Universal)

The Coen Brothers revisit Hollywood 1950s studio heyday with this brisk satirical comedy – think The Big Liebowski meets Barton Fink – that boasts a couple of big, colorful musical numbers. When dimwitted movie star Baird Whitlock (George Clooney, in full cretin mode) is kidnapped during production of a Roman epic by a clutch of Communists, it’s up to Capital Studios’ in-house fixer Eddie Mannix (Josh Brolin) to investigate and recover him while fending off gossip reporters like competitive twin columnists Thora and Thessaly Thacker (Tilda Swinton, totally awesome). Meanwhile, we follow other films and their respective set dramas, including Channing Tatum as a sailor during an all-out, super homoerotic dance number called “No Dames!” – alone worth the price of the Blu-ray or iTunes purchase! Extras include making-of featurettes.

($39.99 Blu-ray; Disney)

Disney’s latest non-Pixar, computer animated smash hit is super-witty, progressive, all-ages entertainment, with a twisty and gripping mystery at its heart, at its best. Set in a city where predators and prey co-exist, female bunny rabbit Judy Hopps decides to pursue a career as police officer, which bunnies are discouraged from due to their small size. Endeavoring to prove naysayers wrong, she manages to land a missing persons case, teaming up with a wily con man fox – her natural enemy – and what they uncover could threaten their very society. The world building is impeccable, with so many sight gags and details and memorable supporting characters including Officer Clawhauser, a nelly rotund cheetah policeman obsessed with female pop star Gazelle (Shakira). Extras include making-of featurettes, filmmaker roundtables, and glimpse at Disney easter eggs hidden throughout the movie.

Vinyl: The Complete First Season

($59.99 Blu-rau, $49.98 DVD; HBO)

Created by Mick Jagger and Martin Scorsese, HBO’s 1970s-set drama series stars Bobby Cannavale as music executive Richie Finestra. Scorsese himself directed the pilot episode, which sees Richie in negotiations to sell his company to a German label. Over the course of nine more episodes, things go south – of course – and Richie and his team must find the next big thing to survive. 70s rock legends from Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant to Elvis appear, while John Cameron Mitchell plays Andy Warhol in several episodes. Actor-driven pop culture fun! Extras include ‘inside the episode’ featurettes, commentaries, and a making of.

7 Gays & Lesbians Working To Put Hillary Back Where She Belongs: In The White House

by JohnGallagher September 25, 2016

Comparing Donald Trump’s campaign staff to Hillary Clinton‘s is like comparing an alfalfa sprout to a redwood. While Trump is happy to rely on a skeletal staff (whom he doesn’t always pay), Clinton is running a high-powered machine with approximately ten times as many staffers as Trump. When it comes to LGBTQ support, the disparity is [...]
