DVD: “The Walk,” “Sicario,” “Steam Room Stories,” & More!

Let’s ring in 2016 with a bang and some barely clad boys shall we?

Joseph Gordon-Levitt helps recreate a famed bit of high wire derring-do in The Walk (above), Emily Blunt is drafted to put a dent in the Mexican drug cartels in gritty thriller Sicario, and racy gay YouTube series Steam Room Series is collected.

Now some trailers and more details!

($39.99 Blu-ray, $29.95 DVD; Lionsgate)

As intense as Zero Dark Thirty or Hurt Locker, director Denis Villeneuve’s perfect companion piece to the recent documentary Cartel Land follows an FBI agent, Kate Macer (Emily Blunt), as she joins a special force tasked with putting the kibosh on Juarez, Mexico’s drug cartel and trafficking across the border. Led by James Brolin, this unit may or may not have some kind of ulterior motive, which a former Colombian prosecutor (Benicio Del Toro) all but admits to. There are some truly harrowing set pieces here, including a border crossing rife with assassins, and visceral, ugly violence, while Blunt truly gets to chew some dramatic meat. It’s one of 2015’s best films for sure. Extras include making-of featurettes

The Walk

($40.99 3D Blu-ray, $34.99 Blu-ray, $30.99 DVD; Sony)

Director Robert Zemeckis dramatizes the tale of a French acrobat’s insane 1974 tightrope walk between Manhattan’s Twin Towers, as previously depicted in Oscar-winning documentary Man On Wire. Joseph Gordon-Levitt assumes a French accent to portray Philippe Petit, who along with a gang of conspirators, mounted a completely dangerous and thrilling — oh, and illegal — stunt. While Petit’s narration takes us through his life story and the heist-like preparations, it’s all about the final third’s set piece of the walk itself, thrillingly staged and shot, especially in 3D. Extras include featurettes and deleted scenes.

Steam Room Stories: Volumes 1-3

($29.99 DVD; Cinema 175)

A rotating cast of towel-clad gay cuties discuss all sorts of subjects in a bathhouse steamroom, from the merits (or demerits) of a “man bun” to ethnic stereotypes to high school reunions to the timeless question of boxers or briefs, in this ultra-popular web series from seasoned gay comedy/romcom writer/director, J.C. Calciano (Is It Just Me?, eCupid). This 4+ hour complete set includes a full 100 episodes plus extras like never-aired episodes, bloopers, and online chats with the cast plus Miss Coco Peru.
