HRC Mourns the Loss of Icon & Advocate David Bowie

This morning, HRC was shocked and saddened to learn of the passing of LGBT icon David Bowie.

In the 1970s, just a few years after Britain decriminalized homosexuality and Stonewall, Bowie became was an icon around the globe. He spoke freely about his own personal identity, increasing visibility and awareness to issues such as expansive gender expression and fluid sexual identities.

For over four decades, he was a role model to many. He spoke frequently about his personal life with the media and through his art. He showed the power of living authentically and openly and his prominence and honesty inspired others to follow his lead.

While Bowie led a very private life in the past decade, he continued to make appearances at charity functions. He supported several charities and causes throughout his lifetime, including human rights and HIV & AIDS.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Bowie’s friends and family.
