Today, several New England sports teams announced their support for transgender equality in the Bay State.
The New England Patriots, New England Revolution, Boston Celtics, Boston Bruins and TD Garden endorsed HB 1577 and SB 735, two bills in the Massachusetts House and Senate that would protect transgender people from discrimination in public spaces. The Boston Red Sox endorsed both pieces of legislation in November.
HRC is a proud member of Freedom Massachusetts, a joint effort of state and national organizations, including Massachusetts Transgender Political Coalition, MassEquality, the American Civil Liberties Union, Freedom for All Americans, Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders, the Massachusetts Gay and Lesbian Political Caucus, BAGLY, the Massachusetts Commission on LGBTQ Youth, the Anti-Defamation League and PFLAG.
Currently there is no state law in Massachusetts explicitly prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity and expression in public accommodations. Seventeen states have now surpassed Massachusetts to pass these much-needed non-discrimination protections.
In 2016, HRC expects to see several state and local legislative battles around LGBT issues. Anti-LGBT bills are likely to be considered in at least 27 states.
HRC will continue to work with lawmakers and Freedom Massachusetts coalition members to pass these vital pieces of legislation.
