Pope Francis Meets With Tim Cook, Continues To Send Mixed Messages

Pope Francis met with openly gay Apple CEO Tim Cook at the Vatican earlier this week, though details of the meeting are under wraps for now.

Lately, Pope Francis has been sending mixed signals when it comes to support of the LGBT community. Last year, he met with antigay Kentucky clerk Kim Davis and a gay couple within days of one another, and just recently he clarified his earlier “who am I to judge?” statements in regards to LGBT people with more confusing doublespeak.

There’s no question where Cook stands on the issue of LGBT equality. Since coming out, he’s been active and vocal in his support of the community, and some hope that he used his time with Pope Francis to share some of those views.

In 2014, Cook said that he considered being gay “among the greatest gifts God has given me,” and he recently stated that discrimination needs to be “pushed back, challenged, overcome and then kept at bay.” We can’t think of a better opportunity to push back than to meet privately with the Pope.

The Pope’s most recent statements regarding gay marriage are outdated at best and homophobic at worst. Speaking to members of the Vatican court last week, he said:

“There can be no confusion between the family God wants and any other type of union. The family, founded on indissoluble matrimony that unites and allows procreation, is part of God’s dream and that of his Church for the salvation of humanity.”

The focus on the family sounds so familiar, you’d think there was an organization named after it or something. Not to lump Pope Francis in with the radical Christian right, but it’s clear to see that both have a long way to go when it comes to LGBT rights.

Let’s hope Tim Cook got the chance to school him a bit.
