Oklahoma Wants To Ban People With STDs From Getting Married

by Graham Gremore February 02, 2016

???????? ???????? HIV test

Antigay lawmakers in Oklahoma are switching up their strategy. If they can’t ban same-sex marriage, then they’re going to try and ban anyone with an incurable STD from obtaining a marriage license. Because everyone knows gay people are crawling with STDs.

Senate bill 773 would require anyone seeking to get married in the Sooner State to first submit a blood test proving they didn’t have any STDs.

“The State Board of Health shall require a blood test for the discovery of syphilis and other communicable or infectious diseases prior to the issuance of a marriage license,” the bill reads.

The bill goes on to say that couples with at least one partner who suffers from an incurable STD, like, you know, HIV/AIDS, will be forbidden from getting married.

The bill was authored by Sen. Anthony Sykes, who claims the law is a way of protecting unsuspecting spouses-to-be from catching communicable or infectious diseases. It’s also a way, he says, for people who may not know they have an STD to learn so they can seek the appropriate treatments.

But Shannon Hall, executive director of Tulsa Cares, an organization that provides services to people living with HIV/AIDS in Tulsa, disagrees. He told Fox 23-TV that the bill not only violates patient privacy laws, but it perpetuates the negative stigma surrounding HIV and other STDs.

The bill also seems t0 ignore the Americans With Disabilities Act, which states that people living with HIV/AIDS are a protected class and cannot be subjected to undue discrimination. Like, say, being denied the opportunity to marry to person they love.
