Pharma-Bro Testifies Before Congress, Gets Kicked Out For Being A Douche, Calls Rep. Elijah Cummings An “Imbecile”

by Graham Gremore February 04, 2016

Pharma-Bro Martin Shkreli was subpoenaed to testify before Congress this morning. He was there to discuss his role in drug price gouging and, as expected, he was a total douchebag about it.

First, Shkreli pled the fifth to nearly every question, with the exception of the pronunciation of his last name.

But it was his visual distain for the elected officials in the room, including revered civil rights champion Rep. Elijah Cummings, that got people most riled up.

Shkreli spent the entire hearing smirking, rolling his eyes and generally acting like a petulant 14-year-old mean girl who feigns an eating disorder — or in Shkreli’s case, a fractured wrist — for attention.

At one point, Rep. Cummings actually had to tell the 32-year-old that his constant snickering was disrespectful.

“It’s not funny, Mr. Shkreli,” Rep. Cummings scolded. “People are dying. And they are getting sicker and sicker.”

Which only prompted Shkreli to snicker more.

When Rep. Trey Gowdy asked why Shkreli was refusing to answer a single question (including one about the name of the hip hop group Wu Tang Clan, whose unreleased album Shkreli bought for $2 million back in December, you know, just because), Shkreli again pled the Fifth, then added, smugly: “I intend to follow the advice of my counsel, not yours.

Finally, he was ordered to leave and was escorted from the chamber. Within minutes of being shoved out the door, he tweeted:

Shkreli’s lawyer, Benjamin Brafman, tried to explain away his client’s bratty behavior by saying: “A lot of what you saw was nervous energy,” and adding that Mr. Shkreli “did not mean any disrespect.”

Afterwards, Rep. John Mica said: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen the committee treated with such contempt,” before calling for Shkreli could be held in contempt of Congress for refusing to cooperate.
