This week, HRC had staff on the ground working in Jefferson City, Missouri alongside our partners at the ACLU of Missouri and PROMO to defeat Senate Joint Resolution (SJR) 39, a measure that would put dangerous religious refusals on the ballot.
The discriminatory bill continues to move in the Missouri General Assembly. The bill can be called for a vote at any time. HRC is joining with PROMO and other local partners to keep an eye on proceedings in the General Assembly.
Across the state, more and more leaders are speaking out against this bill. Faith leaders and businesses, including the iconic midwest company Cash Candy, stand with us against SJR 39.
If you live in Missouri, act now to contact now to contact your state senator. If you are interested in learning more about how you can help defeat this and other anti-LGBT legislation moving in Missouri, contact HRC’s Southern Field Organizer Hope Jackson at firstname.lastname@example.org.
To date, HRC is tracking nearly 200 anti-LGBT bills in 32 states. These range from legislation attempting to undermine marriage equality; proposals aimed to authorize individuals, businesses, and taxpayer-funded agencies to cite religion as a legal reason to refuse goods or services to LGBT people; bills seeking to restrict or criminalize transgender people who use restrooms or locker rooms consistent with their gender identity; and even legislation aimed at eliminating the ability of local governments to protect LGBT residents and visitors.
