Anyone with even a passing familiarity with Twitter knows that one of its main functions is to empower the average individual to be able to throw shade at their betters. Jimmy Kimmel Live! is out with a new “Celebrities Read Mean Tweets,” the tenth time the show as run the segment.

Hugh Grant, Kate Hudson, Greg Kinnear, Melissa McCarthy, Chris Evans, Jane Lynch, Norman Reedus, Margot Robbie, Anthony Mackie, Judd Apatow, Olivia Wilde, Paul Rudd, Ryan Gosling, Zac Efron, Wanda Sykes, Russell Crowe, Bryan Cranston and Kiefer Sutherland all take the Internet hate machine in good stride, laughing at the insults. Some of which, it has to be said, are pretty inventive and funny.

“A dead eyed trash bag that smells like low tide,” is such a well crafted insult one would almost feel honored to be called such. Hudson, the recipient of the insult, seems amused by it.

Reedus, meanwhile, discovers that he has a rather big fan in one man who brags of his anatomy in a quite memorable, albeit disturbing, manner.

And we learn a new phrase via a tweet about Robbie: tongue punch.

“Why does Ryan Gosling always look like he’s trying to squeeze a fart out without making any noise?” Gosling reads, answering, “Because I’m a gentleman.”

Efron also comes in for abuse over his looks, with someone who hasn’t seen his films assuming he must always play a “total douche” based on his face. Ouch.
