Violence Claims the Life of Transgender Woman of Color Goddess Diamond

by Beth Sherouse June 17, 2016

Tragedy has again struck the LGBTQ community as advocates learned earlier this week of the killing of 20-year-old Goddess Diamond, a Black transgender woman, whose body was found June 5 in a burned car in New Orleans. Authorities say that she died of blunt force trauma before the fire. No suspects have been arrested.

“My baby was kind and loving, and [she] had a big heart,” said Diamond’s mother in a local press report. Diamond worked at a local Wal-Mart and had recently moved back to New Orleans after fleeing to Georgia after hurricane Katrina.

Goddess Diamond is at least the 11th transgender person to die from fatal violence thus far in 2016, and several others have died under circumstances that remain unclear. Transgender women of color are at particularly high risk for fatal violence.

HRC extends our sincere condolences to Diamond’s family and friends.
