Speaking before the march, Trudeau said that Canada will continue to lead in the fight for LGBTQ rights.

“We know people look to Canada to see the example. And we will continue to work hard to push the limits of what other countries do because we have to send the message that LGBTQ rights are human rights,” he said in French, the Montreal Gazette reports.

Trudeau’s Liberal Party recently introduced transgender rights legislation and reports last week said Ottawa will soon offer a formal apology to people in the LGBTQ community for past state-sponsored discrimination.

The parade was also attended by many provincial and municipal politicians, including Premier Philippe Couillard and Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre. Raven-Symoné was an honorary co-president at the parade.

There was a moment of silence for the victims of the shooting in Orlando at the LGBTQ nightclub Pulse at the start of the parade, which included some 150 groups and 6,000 people.

Montreal will host the first ever Canada Pride event next year, reports the Montreal Gazette.
