When Gay Worlds Collide: Cher Campaigns For Hillary Clinton In Provincetown

by matt baume August 22, 2016

Maybe Hillary should have picked Cher as her running mate? This weekend, the timeless gay icon campaigned for Hillary Clinton in Provincetown, in perhaps one of the gayest events to ever happen.

“I helped work with her on the Senate campaign,” Cher said, “and I didn’t know how I felt about this woman. But I wanted to meet this woman that the GOP had been trashing since Bill Clinton came into office.”

So, she says, they met over tea. “You are so much fun,” Cher told her when they first met, “and you are so warm, and all these things I never see when you speak.” Hillary apparently told her that she’d been so crushed by the GOP just for trying to set up health care, and never thought it would be so personal. And, Cher added, Hillary is shy. Also, “she’s not the greatest  speaker in the world.” The crowd laughed and cheered, since her meaning was clear: Hillary isn’t an actor, she’s a nerd. She’s not celebrity material, she’s President material.

“None of us are perfect, and I believe she’s genuine.”

Cher also let Donald Trump have it. “He doesn’t want to be president. He wants the crowds,” she said, comparing him to a racist child. “He doesn’t mean we want to make America great again, he means he wants to make America straight and white.”

She also launched into a little storytelling about how she befriended her first lesbian, and also invoked the name of her son Chaz to remind the crowd how important the LGBT community has been to her throughout her life.

“I’m here for a multitude of reasons,” she said. “One, out of love, and two, out of fear. … I’m so frightened about what’s going to happen to this particular community. I know there are other minorities that are going to be screwed as well.”
