Starting today, Caitlyn Jenner has released the first of many articles in a series called “The Real Me.” In this series, Jenner will explore the LGBT community and the issues that many transgender persons face in hopes of raising awareness.
This first blog, although short, speaks about Jenner’s limited experience with the transgender community and how she is working to become more educated on the issues they face.
As she said, “Up until now, I have totally isolated myself from the transgender community, so I have a lot of catching up to do.”
However, with her own transition and with the media coverage that she is receiving, Jenner understands the full importance of her position in the LGBT community:
“I feel such a responsibility to this courageous group to try to get it right and tell all sides of the story.”
We are happy to discover in this blog that Jenner has recently made friends with a group of transgender women and has heard their stories, their trials, and their tribulations:
“It’s been an eye-opening experience for me — and it’s mainly made me realize how fortunate I am. I’ve heard every horror story there is in the book. You wouldn’t believe the types of ordeals these people have had, how they have had to literally fight for their own survival.”
Jenner seems to understand that her fame and her ability to easily share with the media is an amazing tool and can help the transgender community in so many ways. Rather than just sharing her own story, Jenner will also be sharing some of the stories of her new friends.
“Seeing how my new friends have overcome their adversities is such an inspiration. They are so well-adjusted and smart. I’ll be sharing their stories here in the coming weeks and I can’t wait for you to get to know them.”
By sharing their stories and not just her own, Jenner will be helping the transgender community in ways she may not even imagine. Jenner’s own story is vastly different from those of the women’s stories that she will be sharing. By sharing a diversity of stories, the world will have a chance to hear multiple perspectives and experiences. The more experiences, the more likely more transgender youth or persons will be able to relate to them.
Additionally, it will assist in showing those that aren’t transgender a wide variety of experiences of transgender people which will hopefully foster more understanding and awareness of the trans community and the issues they face.
Jenner ends her blog on a positive note, a note that may be become her signature phrase: “Let’s live our true selves and make a positive difference while doing it.”

Life can get busy. With work, kids, family commitments, friends, chores, and the general chaos of everyday life, it can be near impossible at times to sit down for a cup of tea, let alone squeeze in an hour of exercise regularly. However, all things are possible if you set your mind to them. Those that prioritize their fitness nearly...
With the passage of marriage equality last year, laws have been quickly changing across the United States. LGBT couples with or without children weren’t just given the right of marriage, they were provided new protections and benefits within their families. All of a sudden, LGBT couples and families had to figure out how to file jointly when it came to taxes, how to add...

I recently wrote an article for The Next Family called, “Family-Friendly Films That Feature Adoption and Foster Care,” that shared wonderful family films with adoption or foster care story lines. My reasoning behind doing so was because every family deserves a chance to see similar families like theirs represented in various forms of entertainment.
The same can be said of other...
