Happy 4th of July from Vermont!

by Jen July 04, 2015

Since as far back as I can remember, my family has celebrated 4th of July at my Auntie Debbie and Uncle Jerry’s house. Picture a huge pool party – cousins swimming, uncles grilling, and aunts gabbing. Last year the weather caused the party to be cancelled for the first time ever. It would have been the twins’ first Fourth of July with the entire family. Instead, we celebrated with just my immediate family in Maine. It was awesome, but not the same…

This year, we are in Vermont, so we missed the family festivities once again. BUT our friends Amy and Khalil, and their kids Peter and Farah, came to celebrate their first 4th of July with us! (Well, not Amy’s, but it was the first for everyone else!) I looked up celebrations around us, and we settled on Bristol, Vermont, a tiny little town of less than 4,000 people. I will say this – Bristol did not disappoint! We hit the fireworks last night, and they put on a decent show.

Today we headed back to Main Street in Bristol for their 61st annual July 4th parade. It was awesome – everything you’d hope for in a parade. Music, candy being tossed to the kids, horses, and fascinating characters, all to the backdrop of a quaint New England town.

We finished celebrating tonight after dinner with bubbles and s’mores. Though it wasn’t the 4th of July I grew up with, it was still pretty darn awesome.

Life can get busy. With work, kids, family commitments, friends, chores, and the general chaos of everyday life, it can be near impossible at times to sit down for a cup of tea, let alone squeeze in an hour of exercise regularly. However, all things are possible if you set your mind to them. Those that prioritize their fitness nearly...

Representation of Modern Families in Kid-Friendly Entertainment

I recently wrote an article for The Next Family called, “Family-Friendly Films That Feature Adoption and Foster Care,” that shared wonderful family films with adoption or foster care story lines. My reasoning behind doing so was because every family deserves a chance to see similar families like theirs represented in various forms of entertainment.

The same can be said of other...
