Michael Sam to Oprah ‘I’m Not The Only Gay Man In The NFL’

by The Next Family December 30, 2014

During his 90-minute documentary that premiered on the Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN) Saturday, former NFL player Michael Sam said he is not the only gay man in the NFL.

“A very few reached out to me,” Sam said. “[They] told me their gratitude and how they were thankful that I have the courage…They wish they had the courage to come out.”

Sam, who was let go by the Dallas Cowboys in October, was originally going to be the star of a documentary series following his journey through the NFL until St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher thought it wasn’t the right time.

In the player’s first television appearance since his cut, Sam dismissed the idea that he was cut because of his sexuality.

“I don’t like to think that way,” he told Winfrey. “But I do believe I’m a very talented football player and I’m going to continue working hard to try and get that opportunity to play in the league.”

Fisher admitted he was rooting for Sam.

“I will tell you this: I was pulling for Mike,” Fisher said. “I really was, and I don’t say that very often. Mike came in here and did everything we asked him to do.”

Sam was on the Cowboys’ practice squad for seven weeks before being released. He is now a free agent.

Representation of Modern Families in Kid-Friendly Entertainment

I recently wrote an article for The Next Family called, “Family-Friendly Films That Feature Adoption and Foster Care,” that shared wonderful family films with adoption or foster care story lines. My reasoning behind doing so was because every family deserves a chance to see similar families like theirs represented in various forms of entertainment.

The same can be said of other...
