The Home Depot has joined the ranks of other large retailers such as Hallmark, McDonalds, Pepsi, and Ford in snubbing the religious right. A home improvement store, The Home Depot is openly supporting same-sex marriage in the United States. One religious group, the American Family Association (AFA) is upset that the retailer of appliances, kitchen supplies, and building materials is taking sides in the fight to legalize gay marriage.
A spokesperson from the AFA stated, “We presented to the shareholders and to the chairman and the board of directors over 470,000 signature petitions asking them to remain neutral in the culture war, specifically when it addresses gay marriage and homosexual activist groups. We’re disappointed that The Home Depot continues to close the door and not listen to the millions of customers who are offended that they are engaging in the culture war and taking a position in favor of gay marriage.”
I say bravo to The Home Depot for taking a stance and blatantly ignoring the often rabid demands of religious groups opposed to equal treatment of LGBT people. There is no such thing as neutrality in the gay marriage debate. By supporting the status quo—by remaining “neutral”—one supports the unequal treatment of LGBT people by default. Individuals, and companies such as The Home Depot, who believe in equality and the basic ideals on which our society was built have no choice but to support the fight for gay marriage. As more large retailers enter the fray, progress will be made. Momentum is on our side.
I think I will go to The Home Depot this weekend and throw a little gay money their way. I am sure I could find something to buy within my budget. Maybe a new screwdriver…or a paintbrush…or a nail.

Life can get busy. With work, kids, family commitments, friends, chores, and the general chaos of everyday life, it can be near impossible at times to sit down for a cup of tea, let alone squeeze in an hour of exercise regularly. However, all things are possible if you set your mind to them. Those that prioritize their fitness nearly...
With the passage of marriage equality last year, laws have been quickly changing across the United States. LGBT couples with or without children weren’t just given the right of marriage, they were provided new protections and benefits within their families. All of a sudden, LGBT couples and families had to figure out how to file jointly when it came to taxes, how to add...

I recently wrote an article for The Next Family called, “Family-Friendly Films That Feature Adoption and Foster Care,” that shared wonderful family films with adoption or foster care story lines. My reasoning behind doing so was because every family deserves a chance to see similar families like theirs represented in various forms of entertainment.
The same can be said of other...
