In his column for The Washington Post, Steven Petrow highlighted the lack of questions about LGBT equality at the GOP debates.
“With not one question about gay issues Thursday, voters might think marriage equality and LGBT non-discrimination are non-issues to this year’s crop of Republican candidates,” he wrote. “Don’t be fooled by the silence.”
Petrow highlighted Trump’s mixed record on the issues, as well as Cruz’s and Rubio’s extreme anti-LGBT stances.
“In fact, the candidates have campaigned against LGBT equality over and over on the trail,” HRC Communications Campaign Director Brandon Lorenz told Petrow.
Petrow also expanded on Kasich’s comments on LGBT equality. While he attended a same-sex wedding, he also blocked LGBT-inclusive, explicit non-discrimination protections for LGBT Ohioans.
While some candidates like Trump and Kasich try to blur their record, HRC has been tracking these candidates closely. HRC’s site 2016 Republican Facts documents the record and rhetoric of these presidential candidates and where they stand on key LGBT issues. HRC’s blog has also shed a light on where these candidates stand and shared several of their anti-LGBT comments from the campaign trail.
With dangerous candidates like these, there is much at stake for the LGBT community this election season. That is why HRC endorsed Clinton in January at rally in Des Moines, Iowa. Click here to learn more about HRC’s endorsement.
