We’re a little more than two weeks into the new year and already we’ve had one celebrity come out. Former Teen Wolf star Charlie Carver made the announcement on his Instagram page earlier this month. The 27-year-old said he was inspired to do so after seeing a sign that read, “Be who you needed when you were younger.”
More and more notables and not-so-notables are opening up and, in the process, paving the way for future generations to live openly and freely. We can only imagine who might join Carver on the coveted list of openly gay celebrities in 2016.
Last year, we did a round-up of celebrities who we hoped would come out in 2015. None of them did. (Whomp, whomp.) But that’s not stopping us from compiling a new list this year.
Here are seven celebrities who should bust down the closet door in the new year (but probably won’t)…
The actor, model and former Dancing With The Stars contestant has never discussed his sexual orientation, though many Hollywood insiders, as well as several online outlets, including, briefly, his own Wikipedia page, have all claimed he’s one of us. Yet the 34-year-old refuses to confirm or deny. Most would agree that Bennett, who once starred in Mean Girls and made regular appearances on hit TV shows like Law and Order: SVU and Veronica Mars, could use a career boost. Besides an upcoming guest spot on the VH1 series Hit the Floor, his current gig is hosting the Food Network’s reality competition Cake Wars, after all, and before that starred in the made-for-TV movie A Christmas Kiss 2. Coming out might actually up his game.
Speaking of the game, the Green Bay Packers quarterback has gone to great lengths to establish his heterosexuality, coming up just short of a blue dress. Whether he’s allegedly getting engaged to a “good Christian woman,” flirting with Taylor Swift in public, parading around with his actress Olivia Munn on his arm, or going on local radio stations to profess his heterosexuality, Rodgers never misses an opportunity to assert his heterosexuality. There’s just one teeny, tiny problem, and his name is Kevin Lanflisi. Lanflisi is Rodgers’ super-cute live-in “personal assistant.” In 2008, Rogers told Sporting News he met Lanflisi when the young man was interning for the Packers, that they “hit it off,” and that they were now “roommates.” Eight years later, they’re no longer “room-mating,” and based on some shade thrown Rodgers’ direction by Lanflisi on Twitter last year, it doesn’t appear their relationship ended well. Perhaps Kevin grew bitter over playing second fiddle to the women in Aaron’s life. Or perhaps…
OK, OK, so chances are the hip hop crooner isn’t gay. But, then again, he has been the subject of rumors for the better part of a decade, and he did recoil quite dramatically when Madonna planted one on him last April. He also has an affinity for taking shirtless selfies, and then there was that whole thing about the rim job in 2014. True, none of these things are exclusively gay behaviors, but when you put them all together, it’s hard not to wonder.
If the turquoise belts, the checkered pants, the perfectly-plucked eyebrows, the Downton Abbey-inspired office, or the spray-on tan weren’t enough to convince you that disgraced Republican politician Aaron Schock is, in fact, a Homosexual with a capitol H, then surely his abundance of half-naked selfies, his love of Katy Perry and Saudi Arabian antiques, and his expensive male “companion” are. Schock’s vocal support of antigay policies during his brief stint in office did absolutely nothing to help dispel rumors that he likes the D. Nor did his short-lived friendship with blossoming icon Ariana Grande. Time to bust out of that glass closet, Aaron. As you mount your comeback, the honesty it suggests might actually help people forgive and forget your fraudulent behavior in office. Or, well, it might not.
We’ve all seen the photos of Queen Latifah hugging and kissing and holding hands with gal pal Eboni Nichols. Yet she remains tight-lipped about both their relationship and her sexual orientation. Last April, however, during an interview with Uptown magazine, Ms. Owens kinda sorta broached the topic: “People’s ideas, in general, are antiquated when it comes to who you love. We haven’t moved as quickly as we probably should. And the reality is that there’s always been gay people in the black community … I don’t find being gay or lesbian to be a character flaw.” OK, Queen, put your money where your mouth is.
The confirmed bachelor and failed Republican candidate for president doesn’t like talking about his personal life. Particularly, his romantic life. It wasn’t until he was campaigning for president last summer that he briefly–very briefly–like less-than-five-sentences-briefly–discussed his lifelong bachelorhood in a 126-page self-published e-book available exclusively at lindseygraham.com:
I’ve never married. I guess I attribute that to timing, too. The opportunity never presented itself at the right time, or I never found time to meet the right girl, or the right girl was smart enough not to have time for me.
It’s hard to find the right girl, Lindsey, when you keep searching for her in the bars of Dupont Circle. #kidding! As you have asserted in debates, you wanna drop bombs on ISIS. Perhaps, instead, you should drop the gay bomb on American politics, and become the first openly openly gay male member of the U.S. Senate.
The Arrow actor, refusing to confirm or deny his homosexuality for years, once again found himself at the center of rumors this month when a random Tumblr user brought up his notorious 2006 XY magazine nude photo shoot, during which the actor stripped down and locked lips with another dude. Haynes took to his own Tumblr to say, “Was it a secret? Let’s all just enjoy life & have no regrets :).” Some have interpreted the comment as a signal. Others say he was just being coy.
We say: Enough is enough, Colton. Bust that closet door down, gurl!
