Implacable foe of all things LGBTQ, Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia passed away today at this Texas ranch at the age of 79, opening up an election year clash over his replacement between President Obama and the U.S. Senate’s conservative majority, according to My San Antonio News.
The possibility that Scalia’s seat could go vacant until after the November election is one scenario as Obama is now presented with an opportunity to shift the conservative majority to five to four liberal one, a legacy that could help cement his reputation as a gay rights champion.
Perhaps no other American legal and political figured has been so reviled in LGBTQ-friendly circles. Know for his support for arcane sodomy laws in Lawrence V. Texas and his opposition to marriage freedom in Obergefell v Hodges, he never missed an opportunity to lambast the emerging support for gay people in America.
The cause of death has not been announced. Scalia was know to for his outgoing social life and intellectual vigor, even though he often found himself on the fringes of the legal circles he ran in.
