Well, this is awkward.
A top aide for Donald Trump’s transition team told the BBC yesterday that Elton John, who endorsed Hillary Clinton and performed at several fundraisers for her and called Trump a “barbarian”, would be playing at the Trump’s inauguration in January.
“Elton John is going to be doing our concert on the [national] mall for Inauguration,” said Anthony Scaramucci, the vice chair of the presidential inaugural committee.
He then went on to say how a performance by a gay singer is yet another example of how Trump will be “the first American president in U.S. history that enters the White House with a pro-gay rights stance.”
Never mind the fact that he will be accompanied by the most antigay American Vice President in recent history.
Elton’s team, however, was quick to squash the rumor.
“Elton will not be performing at Trump’s inauguration,” his rep said this morning.
Still, Trump reportedly remains a very big fan of Elton’s music, and often played it at his campaign rallies across the country. According to the New York Post, his favorite Elton John song is 1971’s “Tiny Dancer.”
