Pat McCrory Finally Concedes N.C. Gubernatorial Election In Super Awkward Christmas-Themed Video
After nearly a month of kicking and screaming, Pat McCrory has finally conceded the North Carolina gubernatorial election to Roy Cooper in an uncomfortable holiday-themed video posted to his YouTube channel earlier today.
In case you haven’t been paying attention, McCrory lost the election on November 8, but he refused to go silently into the night. After weeks of unsubstantiated claims of voter fraud and insisting on recount after recount after recount, costing the state tens of thousands of dollars, McCrory has finally decided to throw in the towel after the latest count once again found Cooper ahead of him by more than 10,000 votes.
In the video, the one-term antigay governor smiles awkwardly before of an artificial Christmas tree and uses the holiday season as his excuse for finally giving up the fight.
“During this wonderful season, it’s also time to celebrate our democratic process and respect what I see to be the ultimate outcome of the closet North Carolina governor’s race in modern history,” he says with forced yuletide joy.
He goes on to say that despite there still being “continued questions” about the election, he believes it’s time to move on… because it’s Christmas, after all.
“I personally believe the majority of our citizens have spoken and we now should do everything we can do to support the 75th governor of North Carolina, Roy Cooper,” he says, cheerlessly.
McCrory assumed office as North Carolina’s governor in 2013. Earlier this year, he received harsh nationwide criticism for signing House Bill 2 (a.k.a. “the Trans Bathroom Bill”), which nullified all local government ordinances establishing anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ people. Specifically, the bill aimed to police which bathrooms trans people used.
McCrory, who will forever be remembered as North Carolina’s leading bathroom policeman, concluded his speech by borrowing Tiny Tim’s “God bless us, everyone” line from Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, saying:
“I ask all of us to please pray for our new Governor Roy Cooper and our new President Donald Trump and their families.”
