Required Reading: 5 Steps For Curing Your Massive Post Election Hangover
Election got you down? You’re not alone. More than half of America feels exactly what you’re feeling right now.
In case you need a little help getting out of this funk, we’ve put together five simple steps for curing your post election hangover. So without any further ado…
It’s OK to panic. And to cry. And to feel angry. And to cry some more. And to feel ashamed for the country. And to delete your crazy uncle who voted for Trump from your Facebook friends list. Do it. Feel it. Let it all out.
2. Calm down.
OK, now that you’ve gotten that out of your system, take a deep breath. Stop thinking about what could or should have been done differently. Stop playing out all those terrifying doomsday scenarios in your head. Stop planning your exit strategy to Canada. Recognize that what you’re really scared of is the unknown. We don’t know what to expect in the ensuing months and years, but come what may, it probably won’t be as bad as you’re making it out to be in your mind.
Yes, this is a major setback for America and for LGBTQ people. There’s no denying that. But we’ve suffered setbacks before and we’ve always managed to overcome them. Whatever happens, we’re going to be OK. Really, we are! Think of it like this: For the past eight years we’ve been playing offense. Now we’re playing defense. It’s not ideal, but we have a stronger team than ever. 59,938,290 strong, to be exact.
4. Treat yourself.
Feeling a little better? Good. Now it’s time to reward yourself. We just suffered the most insane presidential campaign in American history. It was long. It was ugly. It was emotional. But it’s over. So treat yourself to something nice. Big or small, it doesn’t matter. You’ve earned it.
5. Carry on.
Because, really, what other choice do we have? And remember that there are only three years, 11 months, three weeks, and three days until the next election.
