A Preschooler Gives Thanks on Instagram – Love and Pride

A Preschooler Gives Thanks on Instagram

The Toys R Us catalog came in the mail last week. And as much as that Spanish IKEA commercial reminds us parents that kids want time, attention, and affection more than toys for Christmas, kids want the stuff too. My almost five year old daughter, Eva, wants this, that, this, and more of that. She started making a Christmas list at the beginning of November.

While eating dinner a few nights ago, Eva asked me how to spell Princess Celestia, one of the co-rulers of Equestria and the My Little Ponies who live there. Because I had just finished a particularly insightful yoga practice, I was more motivated than usual to remind her that she is not getting everything on her list. I told her that she can ask Santa for one really special thing, not 10. I also reminded her that we need to focus on November, on Thanksgiving, and on the things in our life which we should be grateful for.

I get it. She’s a little kid, not Mother Teresa. However, I hit home the point that I want a lot of stuff too, but I am also able to look at what I have and know I have everything I need. I am thankful for that. When I asked her to tell me something she is thankful for, she said this, “I am thankful for two mamas who take care of me.”

I’m pretty sure she pushed her Christmas list closer to me while she said it, but I was too focused on her big blue eyes drilling their way into my heart to notice how it got onto my plate. Well played, kid.

In a further effort to really balance her greed with gratitude and to demonstrate to her mamas that she appreciates what she has while understanding the value of money, Eva took to Instagram again. Theses posts are not exactly what I was going for, but I don’t doubt she means every word.

Well, there you go. My daughter reminds us that there are still a lot of things to be thankful for in a world that doesn’t give you all of the ponies you want. Gratitude is a a powerful thing.

Happy Thanksgiving!
