Dad Built Kitchen For Son, Shuts Down Homophobic Trolls

kitchen for son

By Alex Temblador

A kitchen play set has long been a stereotypical “girls” toy due to a long-held stereotype that women are homemakers and the cooks of the family, but boys like to cook too. Just look at the Food Network and their overwhelming amount of male hosts on cooking shows. Go to any number of local restaurants and you will find that many of the chefs or top cooks are men. So why was it absolutely unfathomable to internet trolls that one dad would give his toddler a kitchen play set for his birthday?

Father, Andrew Hook decided to build his two-year-old son, Owen, a kitchen play set for his birthday from an old entertainment center because his son loves to be involved in the kitchen and with cooking. Proud of his son’s excitement for his new toy (which is absolutely impressive—this dad did a great job!) and wanting to show other parents how he built the kitchen so they could build one too, Hook posted photos and instructions on Imgur.

The post garnered attacks toward Andrew and Jessica Hooks but even more so toward their two-year-old son! Some of the comments called the toddler a “faggot” while others stated that the parents were going to turn their son gay.

Hook and his wife Jessica did not appreciate the comments by these trolls. “Had the negativity been directed at myself, I wouldn’t have given any of it a second thought, but since it was directed at my 2-year-old son, I felt like I had to say something,” said Andrew Hook.

And he did, beautifully:

Well, going off of comments I have received both online, and in person regarding my wife and I’s decision to make our SON a kitchen playset and several “daughter” comments and “but he is a boy”, let me be perfectly blunt. Fuck you. Any time we go to our local science center, or to the children’s museum, he always wants to play in the kitchen playset area. He always wants to watch us cook and likes being involved, so we thought this would be a good idea. Furthermore, if my kid wanted a barbie doll i would get it for him. If that is what he wants, then that is what he wants. Its his decision what he wants to play with. Not mine.

You go, dad.

Hook told Huffington Post: “I don’t think that what I said changed any minds, but I had to say something. I would say to those people that the world is progressing, whether they like it or not and to just chill out. My wife and I just want to be the best parents we can be, and that does not affect them in any way, so what is the point in being so hateful?”

Apparently the couple has received a lot of support for breaking gender stereotypes, however, Hook says the present was never meant to do that.

“We never could have imagined that this has gotten to the point it has. The project was never intended to break any kind of gender stereotypes, we just wanted to build our son an awesome toy that we knew he would love.”

That’s good parenting, folks.

Check out some of the positive responses below:

“At first I was like, “Kitchen set…for a boy????” Then I remembered who gives a shit let em play with what he wants.”

“why not right? boys have to learn to cook too! I’d rather my boy end up as a chef rather than a paper pusher”

“As a man, at first I thought a cooking playset for a boy? But then I remembered that I do all of the cooking at home.”

“This is one of the coolest things I have ever seen. You got skills OP. Hope your son enjoys the hell out of it!!!”

“Best parenting ever. Thank you for not reinforcing “traditional” gender roles. If a guy wants to cook, he’ll cook! :D”

“Thanks for showing me how incompetent I am as a parent… But seriously.. It’s amazing.”
