No Better Person to Learn From

The Next Family

By: Don Todd

I spent this last Father’s Day weekend with Grace and her brother and had a great time. Grace had her first dance recital and I had my first opportunity to be the proud parent in the audience. It really got me thinking about how I got to this point. Thinking about all the lessons from my dad that molded me into the father I am today –from being raised by a loving, understanding, and supportive father myself.

I was not the calmest kid or what you would say easy to deal with by any means, but along side my mom they molded me into the man I am today. From being bullied in high school and pulling me out for my safety, to my coming out, to having a daughter. Most dads would have had a “melt down” and written me off, but mine stood by and supported my every move.

I am not saying he doesn’t joke about mistakes I have made in my life and give me crap about it. He is, after all, a major smart ass. That’s the way my family is and it works. My dad was giving Gregg (my partner) trouble the other day for something that happened to him at work and I had to smile. On the way home I had to explain to him, “If he didn’t like you he wouldn’t do that.”

My brothers also join in on this tradition by pointing out the similarities between my dad and Gregg. They are both left-handed and police officers, so I am told I married my father. I couldn’t think of anyone better to have in my life than a great guy like my dad.

Happy Father’s Day!
